Gabriel José García Márquez was a Colombian novelist and journalist regarded as one of the most significant Latin American writers of the 20th century. His 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, the central work of literary magic realism, has sold more than 50 million copies and been translated into dozens of languages, while Love in the Time of Cholera, The Autumn of the Patriarch, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold further established his international reputation. He received the Neustadt Prize in 1972 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
