Frida Kahlo

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican painter known for her many self-portraits and works inspired by Mexican folk culture. After surviving polio and a near-fatal streetcar accident at 18 that left her with lifelong injuries, she turned her physical and emotional pain into a body of work that explored identity, gender, postcolonialism, and Mexican popular culture. Her marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and her membership in the Mexican Communist Party shaped both her work and her public life, and posthumous recognition has made her one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century.
