Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who in the service of Spain led the 1519–1522 expedition that produced the first known European circumnavigation of the globe. He himself was killed in April 1521 at the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines while attempting to subjugate local resistance leader Lapu-Lapu and force conversion of the Mactan inhabitants to Christianity. His expedition's surviving ship, the Victoria, completed the circumnavigation under Juan Sebastián Elcano with only 18 of the original 270 crew alive.
