Erik Dean Prince is an American businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL officer who founded the private military contractor Blackwater in 1997, leading it through the Iraq War years during which Blackwater contractors killed 17 Iraqi civilians at Baghdad's Nisour Square in 2007. He has since been involved in private military and intelligence ventures across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, including unsuccessful efforts to privatize the U.S. war in Afghanistan and to build a private army for the United Arab Emirates. The Blackwater contractors convicted of the Nisour Square killings were pardoned by President Donald Trump in December 2020.
