Pierre Paul Émile Roux was a French physician and bacteriologist who served as one of Louis Pasteur's closest collaborators and co-founded the Pasteur Institute in 1887. Working with Alexandre Yersin, he isolated the diphtheria toxin and developed the diphtheria antitoxin, the first effective therapy for a disease that had been a leading killer of children. He also conducted important research on cholera, rabies, and tuberculosis, and is regarded as one of the founders of the modern field of immunology.
