Elaine Lan Chao is a Taiwanese-American businesswoman who served as U.S. Secretary of Labor under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and as Secretary of Transportation in the first Trump administration from 2017 to 2021. She is married to longtime Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, and an inspector general's investigation found that as Secretary of Transportation she had improperly used her office to benefit her family's shipping company, Foremost Group, including arranging meetings with Chinese officials. She resigned in the immediate aftermath of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
