Constantine I, known as Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337 and is best known as the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, issuing the 313 Edict of Milan that legalized the religion and inaugurating its alliance with imperial power. His private life was no less violent than his predecessors': in AD 326 he ordered the executions of his eldest son Crispus and his second wife Fausta on disputed charges. The construction of his new eastern capital, Constantinople, and the Council of Nicaea he convened in 325 cemented the institutional foundation of medieval Christianity.
