Christopher James Christie is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 55th governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018. His administration was engulfed by the Bridgegate scandal, in which his appointees deliberately closed access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September 2013 to punish a local Democratic mayor for refusing to endorse the governor's re-election; two former aides were convicted of related federal crimes before having those convictions overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2020. He twice closed New Jersey state beaches during a 2017 budget impasse and was photographed sunbathing with his family on one of them with no other beachgoers in sight.
