Cher, born Cheryl Sarkisian LaPiere, is an American singer and actress whose six-decade career has spanned television variety shows, pop and dance music, and acclaimed film roles. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Moonstruck (1987), a Grammy Award, an Emmy, and a Cannes Best Actress prize, making her one of a small number of artists to span the major American entertainment honors. A longstanding ally of LGBTQ communities and a champion of her transgender son Chaz Bono, she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 2018.
