Che Guevara

1928 – 1967

Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary and physician who, alongside Fidel Castro, became a principal commander of the Cuban Revolution that overthrew the Batista regime in 1959. He served in early Castro government posts including president of the National Bank and minister of industry, then left Cuba in 1965 to lead guerrilla campaigns first in the Congo and later in Bolivia, where he was captured and executed by the Bolivian Army in October 1967. The 1960 Alberto Korda photograph of his face has since become one of the most reproduced images of the 20th century.
