Bobby Jindal, born Piyush Jindal, is an American politician who served as the 55th governor of Louisiana from 2008 to 2016, becoming the first Indian American to serve as a U.S. governor. His tenure produced sustained budget cuts to public higher education and the state's mental-health and child-welfare systems, and Louisiana ended his second term with one of the largest projected budget deficits in its history. His 2016 presidential campaign, launched as the GOP's would-be "diversity" candidate, polled near zero throughout and was suspended after just five months.
