Bob Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman, is an American singer-songwriter widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, with an estimated 125 million records sold worldwide over a career spanning more than six decades. From the protest songs of his early-1960s folk period through his 1965 turn to electric rock and the dense religious and surrealist songbooks that followed, he expanded the lyrical vocabulary of popular music to incorporate poetry, blues, gospel, country, and politics. He was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
