Elisabeth Dee DeVos is an American billionaire and political activist who served as the 11th U.S. Secretary of Education from 2017 to 2021 in the first Trump administration. A longstanding funder of school-voucher and charter-school causes, she had no prior experience in public education and was confirmed only after Vice President Mike Pence cast the first tie-breaking confirmation vote for any cabinet position in U.S. history. As Secretary she rolled back Title IX guidance protecting student survivors of sexual assault, attempted to reinstate predatory student-loan servicers, and weakened federal oversight of for-profit colleges accused of fraud.
