Benazir Bhutto served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996, becoming the first woman elected to head the government of a Muslim-majority country in modern history. As leader of the Pakistan People's Party, she championed a liberal and secular agenda in a deeply conservative political environment and survived multiple coups, dismissals, and years of self-imposed exile. She was assassinated in December 2007 at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi while attempting a return to power.
