Babe Ruth
1895 – 1948
dead
George Herman "Babe" Ruth, nicknamed the Bambino and the Sultan of Swat, was an American Major League Baseball player whose 22-season career from 1914 to 1935 transformed the sport from a low-scoring contest of place hitting into the modern home-run-driven game. After beginning as a star left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, he was sold to the Yankees in 1919 and went on to set numerous batting records, including the single-season home-run mark of 60 (1927) that stood for 34 years and a career total of 714 that stood for 39. He was a member of the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
