Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean army officer and dictator who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990 after leading the U.S.-backed military coup that overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende on 11 September 1973. His regime tortured an estimated 40,000 people and killed or disappeared more than 3,000 political opponents, while his "Chicago Boys" economists imposed an aggressive program of privatization and deregulation as a global free-market test case. He was indicted on multiple human-rights and corruption charges before his death in 2006 but never tried.
