Muhammad Anwar el-Sadat served as the third president of Egypt from 1970 until his assassination in 1981, leading the country through the 1973 October War and the subsequent peace process with Israel. In 1978 he and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed the Camp David Accords, for which they were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and the following year Egypt became the first Arab state to formally recognize Israel. He was assassinated by Islamist soldiers during a military parade in Cairo in October 1981.
