Antonin Gregory Scalia was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1986 until his death in 2016 and was the intellectual anchor of the Court's conservative bloc. He authored or joined opinions that invalidated key sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, weakened campaign-finance restrictions in Citizens United v. FEC, and dissented from the 2015 marriage-equality decision Obergefell v. Hodges. As the principal architect of textualist and originalist constitutional interpretation, his framework has shaped the Court's conservative jurisprudence for decades.
