Anthony David Weiner is an American politician and registered sex offender who represented New York City in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011 before resigning over the first of multiple sexting scandals. In 2017 he pleaded guilty in federal court to transferring obscene material to a 15-year-old North Carolina girl and was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. The discovery of additional emails on his laptop during the FBI investigation led to FBI director James Comey's late-October 2016 letter to Congress reopening the Hillary Clinton email inquiry, an intervention widely cited as a contributor to her loss in the 2016 election.
