Anthony Stephen Fauci is an American physician-scientist and immunologist who served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 and as chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden from 2021 to 2022. Across nearly four decades he led the U.S. response to AIDS, SARS, anthrax, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19, advising seven presidents from Reagan to Biden. President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 for his contributions to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which is credited with saving more than 25 million lives globally.
