Anne Frank
1929 – 1945
dead
Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank was a German-born Jewish diarist who, with her family and four others, hid for over two years in a concealed annex above her father's Amsterdam business during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The diary she kept from 1942 until the group's betrayal in August 1944 was published posthumously by her father in 1947 as The Diary of a Young Girl, and has since been translated into more than 70 languages and read by tens of millions of people worldwide. She died of typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945, weeks before the camp's liberation by British forces, at the age of 15.
