Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869 after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first U.S. president to be impeached. Coming to office at the end of the Civil War, he opposed congressional Reconstruction at every turn—vetoing civil-rights legislation, restoring property to former Confederate officers, and resisting the protection of newly freed African Americans, who faced widespread violence in the South during his tenure. The Senate fell one vote short of removing him from office in 1868 over his violation of the Tenure of Office Act.
