Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was an English filmmaker known as the "Master of Suspense" whose six-decade career produced more than 50 feature films, including Rebecca (1940), Notorious (1946), Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963). His pioneering techniques in cinematography, editing, and audience manipulation shaped the language of the modern thriller and have been studied and imitated by filmmakers ever since. He received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1979 and was knighted just months before his death in 1980.
