Rene Alexander Acosta is an American lawyer who served as the 27th U.S. Secretary of Labor from 2017 to 2019 in the first Trump administration before resigning amid renewed scrutiny of his earlier role in the Jeffrey Epstein non-prosecution agreement. As U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida from 2005 to 2009, he approved a 2008 plea deal that allowed Epstein to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges and serve only 13 months in county jail, despite federal prosecutors having identified dozens of underage victims. A federal judge later ruled the deal had violated the Crime Victims' Rights Act by being concealed from Epstein's victims.
