Alex Johnson was an American Major League Baseball outfielder who played 13 seasons for eight teams from 1964 to 1976, winning the 1970 American League batting title with the California Angels with a .329 average. Selected as an All-Star that season, he was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year in 1968. He spoke openly about the racism and mental-health struggles he endured during his playing days, which informed his pioneering 1970s grievance against the Angels that prompted the league to formally recognize emotional disability for the first time.
