Aldo Moro was an Italian statesman who served five terms as Prime Minister of Italy between 1963 and 1976 as a leader of the centre-left wing of Christian Democracy. A principal architect of the "historic compromise" between Christian Democrats and the Italian Communist Party, he was kidnapped in March 1978 by the far-left Red Brigades, who held him for 55 days while the Italian government refused to negotiate. He was executed by his captors in May 1978; his murder remains one of the defining traumas of postwar Italian politics.
