Alberto Kenya Fujimori Inomoto was a Peruvian politician who served as president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, ruling effectively as a dictator after his April 1992 "self-coup" dissolved the legislature and the judiciary. His government's intelligence services ran the Grupo Colina death squad, which carried out the 1991 Barrios Altos and 1992 La Cantuta massacres of suspected leftist sympathizers. Convicted in 2009 of human-rights crimes and sentenced to 25 years in prison, he was released on humanitarian grounds in late 2023, less than a year before his death in 2024.
