Albert of Prussia was the 37th and last grand master of the Teutonic Knights and, after his 1525 conversion to Lutheranism, the first ruler of the Duchy of Prussia—the secularized Protestant state he created from the former Monastic State of the Teutonic Knights. He is widely viewed as the seed of Prussian militarism and territorial ambition, the dynastic and institutional foundation on which the Hohenzollerns built two and a half centuries of expansion. He devoted significant resources to converting the surviving pagan Old Prussian population by force.
