Albert Kesselring was a German Generalfeldmarschall who led Luftwaffe forces in the Battle of Britain, the North African Campaign, and the long Italian Campaign of the Second World War. As commander-in-chief in Italy from 1943 to 1945 he ordered or condoned the reprisal massacres of Italian civilians and partisans, including the Ardeatine massacre of 335 men outside Rome and the slaughter of 560 villagers at Sant'Anna di Stazzema. He was sentenced to death by a British military tribunal for war crimes in 1947, had his sentence commuted, and was released from prison in 1952.
