Albert Einstein
1879 – 1955
dead
Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist whose theories of special and general relativity rewrote the foundations of modern physics, replacing Newtonian assumptions about absolute space and time. His 1905 "miracle year" produced four papers including the mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc², and his 1915 general theory of relativity remains the modern theory of gravitation. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect, and after fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933 he became a leading public advocate for civil rights and nuclear nonproliferation.
