Alan Irwin Menken is an American composer and conductor whose film scores and songs revived and defined the modern Disney animated musical, beginning with The Little Mermaid (1989) and continuing through Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and Tangled. He is one of only 22 people to have won the competitive EGOT—Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony—and his eight Academy Awards, principally shared with the late lyricist Howard Ashman, make him among the most-decorated film composers in history.
