Alan Alda is an American actor, writer, and director whose seven-decade career is anchored by his portrayal of Captain Hawkeye Pierce in the CBS sitcom M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983, for which he won six Primetime Emmy Awards as actor, writer, and director. His later film and television work has earned him an Academy Award nomination for The Aviator (2004) and additional Emmy recognition for The West Wing and 30 Rock. He has also spent decades hosting Scientific American Frontiers and founding the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University to train scientists in clear public communication.
