Alfred Oerter Jr. was an American discus thrower who won gold medals in the same individual event at four consecutive Summer Olympics—Melbourne 1956, Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964, and Mexico City 1968—the first athlete in any individual track-and-field event ever to do so. He set the world record in the discus on three separate occasions and was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame in 2012. He continued throwing competitively into his 50s and remained a fixture of U.S. track and field until his death.
