Akira Toriyama was a Japanese manga artist and character designer regarded as one of the most influential authors in the history of manga. His series Dragon Ball, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, became one of the best-selling and most-watched franchises in the world, fundamentally shaping the global popularity of anime and manga, while his earlier Dr. Slump won the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award. He also designed the iconic characters of the Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger video game series, and died of a subdural hematoma in March 2024.
