Akio Toyoda is a Japanese business executive who served as president and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation from 2009 to 2023 before becoming chairman of the company founded by his grandfather Kiichiro Toyoda. Under his leadership Toyota became the world's largest automaker by sales, expanded the global market for hybrid vehicles led by the Prius, and pursued a multi-pathway approach to vehicle electrification rather than a single all-battery strategy. He has been a prominent public voice in debates over the pace and form of the global transition to electric vehicles.
