Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland was a French explorer and botanist who accompanied Alexander von Humboldt on the celebrated 1799–1804 expedition through Spanish America, co-authoring the multi-volume scientific results. He cataloged some 6,000 plant species new to European science during the journey and later served as botanist at Empress Joséphine's Malmaison gardens. He emigrated to South America in 1816, where he was imprisoned for nearly a decade by the Paraguayan dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia before living out his life as a botanist in Argentina.
