Ahmad Shah Massoud was an Afghan military commander and politician known as the "Lion of Panjshir" for his decade-long resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. After the Soviet withdrawal he led the Northern Alliance against the Taliban regime that took Kabul in 1996, holding out in the Panjshir Valley until his assassination on 9 September 2001 by al-Qaeda operatives posing as journalists—two days before the September 11 attacks. He is honored as a national hero of Afghanistan.
