Vipsania Agrippina, known as Agrippina the Elder, was a prominent member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty of imperial Rome. The granddaughter of Augustus, wife of the popular general Germanicus, and mother of the emperor Caligula and the empress Agrippina the Younger, she accompanied her husband on his campaigns on the Rhine and held the loyalty of the legions through episodes of mutiny. After Germanicus's suspicious death in 19 AD she became a focal point of opposition to the emperor Tiberius, who ultimately exiled her to the island of Pandataria, where she starved herself to death.
