Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, was the 48th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili branch of Shia Islam, leading the community for 72 years from 1885 until his death in 1957. He served as the first president of the All-India Muslim League and was the founding president of the League of Nations General Assembly in 1937, the first Muslim to hold the office. He directed substantial portions of the wealth he received as Imam toward modern educational, medical, and welfare institutions for Muslim communities across South Asia and East Africa.
