Ada Lovelace

1815 – 1852

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was an English mathematician and writer whose 1843 notes on Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine included what is now widely regarded as the first published algorithm intended to be executed by a machine. The only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron, she was also the first to recognize that such machines could in principle manipulate symbols of any kind—not merely numbers—anticipating the conceptual foundations of general-purpose computing by more than a century. The U.S. Department of Defense programming language Ada is named in her honor.
