Abiy Ahmed
1976 – 20??
Abiy Ahmed Ali has served as Prime Minister of Ethiopia since April 2018 and was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for the rapprochement with Eritrea that ended the two countries' twenty-year border standoff. Just over a year later, in November 2020, his federal forces and Eritrean allies launched the Tigray War against the Tigray People's Liberation Front; the United Nations and Amnesty International documented massacres including the November 2020 Mai Kadra killings, the November 2020 Axum massacre, the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and widespread sexual violence by Ethiopian and Eritrean troops. The conflict, which lasted until November 2022, is estimated to have caused 600,000 or more deaths, ranking among the deadliest wars of the twenty-first century.
