Abigail Adams was the wife and closest political advisor of John Adams, the second president of the United States, and the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth. Her March 1776 letter urging her husband to "remember the ladies" while drafting new laws for an independent America made her one of the earliest American voices for women's legal rights. Her extensive correspondence with leading figures of the founding era is now considered a vital primary source on the politics of the Revolution and the early Republic.
