Abbas Kiarostami

1940 – 2016

Abbas Kiarostami was an Iranian film director, screenwriter, and photographer regarded as one of the most prominent filmmakers in world cinema. His Koker Trilogy, Close-Up (1990), Taste of Cherry (1997)—which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes—and The Wind Will Carry Us (1999) earned him sustained international acclaim while making films under the constraints of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He continued working with international cast and crew on Certified Copy (2010) and Like Someone in Love (2012) before his death in 2016.
