Aaron Burr Jr. was an American politician and lawyer who served as the third vice president of the United States from 1801 to 1805 under President Thomas Jefferson. In July 1804 he killed former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a duel at Weehawken, New Jersey, ending Hamilton's life and effectively his own political career. He was subsequently arrested and tried for treason in 1807 over allegations that he had conspired to seize parts of the western United States and Mexico to form an independent nation, escaping conviction on a technicality.
